After hearing Americans complain about the new Affordable Care Act, and after discussing medical insurance in class, I decided to investigate the details of this new law that most people despise so much. I found that this Act is exactly what Americans needed to offset the dominance that the insurance companies have over the lives of the American people. According to the Affordable Care Act (Read the Law), insurance companies can no longer deny coverage to people because of pre-existing conditions, preventative care is completely free, small business owners that must offer health care to their employees will receive a tax credit in order to offset the new expense, and patients now have the ability to appeal to insurance companies that deny the cost of their treatment. This new law sounds like everything this nation has needed for decades. Yes, people have to pay for insurance now, but if people want insurance in America (which the vast majority of them do), they are going to have to pay for it whether the Affordable Care Act is there or not. I think this new law will do wonders for our country in providing millions of Americans with coverage that they desperately need, as well as making sure that insurance companies are treating their customers fairly. I understand that small business owners are inconvenienced by having to supply their employees with health care, but they will receive all of that money back in their income taxes. Personally, I hope this law stays around for a long time. What do you guys think?

I was in the middle about the Affordable care act, not sure if it did any good or harm, But after reading your post it really helps to the true intend of this act. It believe this act will do great things in the long run, that many people do not see know. But it has to be well executed though. If not it would be a complete failure.
ReplyDeleteI'm not trying to say that I disagree with you, since I honestly have not read much about the affordable care act, but does it not always turn out with laws and such like this, that when it is first introduced everybody is so excited about how great it is and what great things it will do for us. But in the end when the law or act has been put into place, nothing turns out like we had originally thought it would, because of the things we were unaware of, the things that were so cleverly written into the fine print where it would so easily get over looked. So, how is this time any different than all the others, how can you know for sure that this one is going to work out in our favor that it will bring quality healthcare to all and still be able to stand strong. This is simply just my thoughts on this issue.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kiran on this Act. I find it that Americans already deal with insurance companies not covering them of certain surgeries because of things as in pre-existing conditions. Therefore, I would have to say that this Act is worth a try.
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds promising, however I think it was a mistake to nick-name it 'Obamacare'. I think that put an overall negative connotation on the act. This definitely increased my understanding on the act and what it is supposed to do. I think it has very good intentions but as Hannah said, things such as these don't always turn out as they are written. I think it has a high chance of becoming thought of by Americans in the same light they think of Communism in. only time will tell.
ReplyDeleteWhile I don't think that it solves all the issue (but really, what feasibly could?) I think its a step in a better direction. My sister has a pre-existing condition and up until this passed she didn't have very good healthcare, she just had the base minimum. And Hannah, you're right, usually with laws like this people are really excited in the beginning and then it ends up being disappointing at best and totally ineffective at worst. But I think this has more to do with the way things are passed and amended during that process so that the final outcome is a law that is unrecognizable from what was first planned.
ReplyDeleteAnother point of note regarding the out and out hostility a lot of people have had towards this thing has a lot more to do with the general public's view of the Obama administration. I was watching the Late Show several months ago and they did a segment on this. A correspondent or intern (can't remember which) went on the street to ask people their thoughts on Obama care. If the person had strong objections (and A LOT if not most people did) they were asked a follow up question, "What would you think about an Affordable Healthcare Act?" and the interviewer then proceeded to detail the Obama/Affordable Healthcare bullet points. And every single person said that they would agree with "something like that."
It was really painful to watch. People objected outright just because it was associated with the Obama administration, when they were told what it actually entailed, under a different name, they agreed with it.
